What to wear when traveling to Qatar
Hola,
Some of you may already know that in April I visited Doha, Qatar. But before we get into details, let me tell you about my entire trip, so you understand why I’m almost all the time in those blue (amazing) trousers (from H&M). In short, my trip was like this: first stop Germany (3 days – including a wedding!), second stop Doha (7 days – working most of them) and then back for another night in Germany before heading back home to Valencia (Spain).
So now, you understand my game of mixing clothes. Actually, it was kind of crazy packing. I had to think of my guest wedding outfit, and my 5 days of formal style combinations, plus the normal tourist outfits, including one or two comfortable airplane combos. To be honest, I was really focused on the main purpose of my trip, which was the professional one. I offered training to a Qatari company, that’s why I really didn’t have too much time for taking photos (I only took around 2GB of photos; only).
What to wear when traveling to Qatar
Before starting to pack, I did what everybody does when in doubt: search on Google. And what I found out was useful, but not accurate. So, below you can read some advice about what to wear in Qatar.
First of all, relax and take it easy. It is not that bad! You really don’t have to buy a new wardrobe (like I almost did) just because you visit Qatar. If you are not wearing the abaya – the long black dress, people will look at you anyway, just because you are different. But from my experience, I felt relaxed and even if I was scared by the idea of men staring at me, I somehow felt very safe. Actually, Qatar is a very peaceful country and I never once felt threatened.
Secondly, you can wear any colors. There is no problem with wearing strong colors or pastels. Because of the hot temperatures, I would say that pastels and light colors are even welcomed. Doha has such a beautiful sky and throws a crystalline light over the city, when I was wearing white or light blue, I was actually looking better because of it’s radiance.
In Qatar there are two main rules for Western women: (1) you should cover your shoulders and knees and (2) dress decent. When I read this on the internet, I thought that I would have to wear only long skirts, and I don’t know why but for some reason, I was even thinking that pants would look weird. Just to be sure I bought two midi skirts that I ended up not needing to wear.
I quickly came to the conclusion that dressing in Doha is not actually that difficult, you can wear anything you want, but the key is to dress respectfully, not showing too much of your décolletage for example. You can even get away with short skirts, if you combine them with black tights.

P.S.: You can even take selfies too!
At Katara – I will tell you more about Doha, with more amazing photos from this beautiful city, in a future blog post.
